Staying on track with your goals

Staying on track with your goals

Measuring the progress of your goals gives you an idea of what you have done about your goals so far, and what you need to do to proceed further. This process of evaluation is in relation to your important goals that do not necessarily have deadlines. To see consistent progress towards those goals, you must deliberately follow-up on them. This is done by assessing yourself and your set goals regularly using the key points shared below.

1. Why is this goal important to you?

Revisit your main goal to figure out why the goal is important in the first place. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether this goal is worth pursuing. It helps you weed out certain goals that may not be important to you at this time.

2. What have you done to ensure that goal materializes?

When you decide to proceed with that goal, you then assess your present state. With the big picture in mind, figure out what necessary plans and actions you need to implement. During this stage, you must be transparent with yourself about what you have actually started or finished.

This is not the time to wallow in self-pity or pride concerning your previous actions. Cogitating over uncompleted task or being too prideful about completing a goal will keep you stagnant. Keep a healthy balance by challenging yourself to keep advancing regardless of where you find yourself, presently.

3. What should you do next to keep up the pace?

Knowing your present state will help you project and plan your next steps. Envision your next steps or moves and be ready to take action by putting together the necessary tasks. These tasks must be carefully analyzed to ensure they are aligned with your overall goal. For example, if you want to build your knowledge in a particular area, you can start by reading books on a specific topic, or taking a course related on that; this makes a daunting task more manageable.

4. How should you go about completing the new task?

Now that you have established a plan and identified the tasks you need to carry out, it is advisable to break them into smaller tasks. These smaller tasks will help you to monitor your progress effectively without feeling overwhelmed with the major tasks. To ensure these small tasks are completed, it is best to put a deadline to it. Schedule these tasks into your calendar and treat them with urgency. If it is not scheduled, it will encourage procrastination and halt your overall progress on your goal. Let’s say you want to read books related to a particular topic, you can do so by reading one book at a time in a given time frame. Before you know it, you have read several books pertaining to that topic.

5. What to do after you complete a task or goal?

Develop a habit of celebrating any scheduled task or goal that you complete, this serves as a reward for your accomplishment. This act registers in your brain and encourages you to keep achieving more. Think about it, if you were the brain processing all these plans and actions, wouldn’t you want to be rewarded for getting things done? The reward needs to be memorable and special for you. It can be getting that dress you placed in your online shopping cart, having that “cheat meal”, getting that gadget you’ve always wanted.

Monitoring your progress on a particular goal should be an ongoing process. The more you engage in the process, the more likely you will notice growth and advancement. During this process, you might also detect shortcomings and address them in a timely manner.
